Jacob Neusner, in his essay, "The Speech the Graduates Didn't Hear," argues that
graduating seniors at his institution have not been properly prepared for the world that
awaits them. Using biting criticism bordering on the cynical, Neusner explains that the
higher education system based on using grades as evaluations fails to measure or
challenge students, producing a system instead that coddles and pampers them. The
reasons for this abuse are shared: students have not put forth effort, but professors
also have not engaged and pushed students to do their best, primarily because these
professors simply didn't want to be bothered.
