Jacob Neusner, in his essay, "The Speech the Graduates Didn't Hear," argues that

graduating seniors at his institution have not been properly prepared for the world that

awaits them. Using biting criticism bordering on the cynical, Neusner explains that the

higher education system based on using grades as evaluations fails to measure or

challenge students, producing a system instead that coddles and pampers them. The

reasons for this abuse are shared: students have not put forth effort, but professors

also have not engaged and pushed students to do their best, primarily because these

professors simply didn't want to be bothered.
