Expository Concept

For our assignment, I am asking that you consider selections from our reader, some additional articles I will supply in handouts, various websites, class discussions, and your own experiences to answer the question:

What is your definition of a good college education?

The idea of what constitutes "good" isn't as easy as it sounds. Nevertheless, I would like you to be as concrete in your definition as possible. You will get to choose the attributes of the concept that you believe make up its definition. For example, here's one example from a letter writer to the Star Tribune who applied his own terms for his answer to the very abstract question "What is good music?"

Three important questions to consider as you muse about your definition:

    1. What should a college-educated student know?

    2. What should a college-educated student value?

    3. What should a college-educated student be able to do?

Finally, you should be sure to include at least two "outside voices" in your definition. These likely will come from essays from our Reader (Frye and Olmstead), and printouts I will supply (Neusner, Weisenfeld, Stemwedel, Bruni, and Farber). You may use other sources, but these are the most readily available and familiar.
