Required material:

Saladin, K. S.  2010.  Anatomy & Physiology: the unity of form and function, 5th ed.  McGraw-Hill, Boston.

Eder, D.J., S.L. Kaminsky, and J.W. Bertram.  2009. Laboratory Atlas of Anatomy and Physiology, 6th  ed.  McGraw-Hill, Boston

Stabler, T. and P. Zao.  2008.  Physio-Ex 8.0: Laboratory Simulations in Physiology.   Benjamin Cummings, San Francisco.

Biology Department.  Fall 2009-Spring 2010.  Anatomy and Physiology II: Laboratory Manual for Biology 2114 at Anoka-Ramsey Community College

Grading:

Before each lab unit, a 5-pt. online prelab quiz will be administered via Desire To Learn (D2L).  The student is expected to review the material in the unit and take the quiz before lab.  You will not be allowed to take the quiz after lab.  Notes can be used for the quiz, but it is timed, so you will not have time to look up every question.  You are not allowed to reveal questions or answers to classmates or else you will get no credit for the entire unit

Lab exams are given as practicals with questions at several stations.  Students roam around to each station and answer the questions there.  Rules for practical exams are given in the lab manual.  There are nine 25-point exams given throughout the semester.  The lowest grade of these nine will be dropped from your point total.

There will be eight activities conducted during lab that require turning in a 10-point handout.  Many of these are group activities in which the groups turn in a joint assignment.  Each student is expected to contribute equally to the assignment.  The lowest handout grade will be deducted from your total lab grade.  The acid-base balance handout is worth 20 points and cannot be dropped.

Grade points:

Prelab quizzes – 8 @ 5 pts.                            40 pts.

Lab exams -  8 (9-1 drop) @ 25 pts.           200 pts.

Acid-base assignment                                  20 pts.

Handouts 7 (8-1 drop) @ 10 pts.                  70 pts.

Total                                                               330 pts.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is expected of all students for all labs.  Material is presented in lab that cannot easily be replicated.  Lab exams and most lab activities cannot be made up.  Switching to another lab is allowed only once a semester and you must contact your instructor and the instructor who teaches the lab you want to switch to prior to the lab.  There is a limit on how many students can attend a lab and there is no guarantee there will be space available for you.  It is also advised that you contact your own instructor of any other absences.  You are responsible for finding out any information you missed during an absence or tardiness.

Academic Dishonesty

Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated in lab and will result in a zero grade for any handout or lab practical where academic dishonesty is discovered.  Plagiarism includes using the exact wording or paraphrased wording of another student’s work or from other sources without proper citation (quotation marks and author name and year published or website address).  It is preferred that all answers be in your own words when turning in individual or group work.

Cheating on lab practicals include, but is not limited to, the following activities:

looking onto someone’s answer sheet, even if you do not use their answers,

knowingly allowing someone to look onto your answer sheet,

      using a cheat sheet,

asking someone what is on a lab practical or telling someone what is on a lab practical,

waiting out in the hallway when people have just taken the exam to hear them discuss the lab practical,

bringing home lab material meant to stay in lab, e.g., models, dissected organs, etc.,

going or looking into a lab where the lab practical is set up, and,

getting the answer sheet before the test.

All incidents of academic dishonesty are reported to the Deans of Students Services.

Accommodations - Any disability accommodations should be discussed with the Director of Access Services (433-1334).  Religious accommodations should be discussed with the professor at the beginning of the semester.
