Chapter 17 Learning Objectives:

After studying this material you should be able to:

1.      Compare and contrast the nervous system and the endocrine system and discuss their differences as well as their similarities.

2.      Define hormone and distinguish it from a neurotransmitter. 

3.      Compare and contrast exocrine and endocrine glands.

4.      List the major organs of the endocrine system and the major hormones produced &/or secreted by them.

5.      Distinguish between a pure and a mixed endocrine organ and give an example of each.

6.      Create a chart that lists the location of the following organs in the body, the hormones (as discussed in class) secreted by each, the function of each of these hormones, and the association of any of these hormones with any disorders discussed in class: pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pineal, gonads, pancreas, hypothalamus, and thymus.  

7.      Identify the chemical classes to which various hormones belong.

8.      Discuss how hormones are transported to their target organs and the effect their presence has on the target organ.

9.      Distinguish between bound and unbound hormones and why transport proteins are needed.
