Chapter 6 Learning Objectives:

After studying this material you should be able to:

    1.      Describe the histological structure of the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.

  1. Compare and contrast the characteristics and functions of the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.

  2. Name and describe the function of each of the four types of epidermal cells.
  3. List the five layers of the epidermis in order from deepest to most superficial.
  4. Describe distinctive features of each layer of the epidermis.
  5. Differentiate between thick skin and thin skin.
  6. Compare and contrast the two layers of the dermis.  What type of tissue composes each layer?
  7. List and define the eight functions of the skin as discussed in class.
  8. Describe how the skin inhibits the growth of pathogens on its surface.
  9. Explain how the skin functions in thermoregulation of the body.
  10. List the general functions of hair.
  11. Describe the function of the hair papilla, hair receptors, and the arrector pili muscle.
  12. Compare and contrast merocrine, apocrine, and holocrine glands.
