CHEM 1061 LAB PROJECT PRESENTATION EVALUATION CRITERIA

The following criteria should be considered when grading presentations of classmates.  You will rate the criteria listed below on a scale of 0-5.

5 = Excellent The presenters have excelled and have exceeded expectations. Returns 100% of the points in this category.
4 = Good Good/very good quality, all expectations have been met. Returns 87.5% of points in category.
3 = Fair Most expectations fulfilled, but some slight improvements may be needed with respect to quality, clarity, or organization. Returns 75.0% of points in category.
1-2 = Poor Expectations not met in this area. Significant improvement is needed. Returns 50.0%(1) or 62.5%(2) of points in category.
0 = Missing This section is missing from the presentation. Returns 0% of points in category.

The scores you submit will later be converted into points. 20 points are possible for the presentation part of the lab project. 10 of those points will be from content standard, 5 from ability to create a quality product, and 5 from effective oral communication. The possible point values for each item are listed below.

  1. Content Standard (10 points total)
    1. Research topic or question (10%): Clearly stated, appropriately selected.
    2. Introduction (10%): A brief overview of the research topic is given, clearly stated. Hypothesis is stated here.
    3. Summary of Procedure (10%): Briefly stated, clearly explains what was done and why.
    4. Significant Results (20%): Results are appropriately presented and well organized.
    5. Discussion of findings (20%): Interpretation of the results is mentioned here. For example, were the results what you expected?  Were there any unexpected or surprising results? What were they and why might they have occurred?
    6. Uncertainty in measurements (10%) Possible sources for errors are reasonable and suggestions for improvement are given.  Data is to the proper number of significant figures.
    7. References (10%): References are cited completely and consistently. References for visuals such as photos and diagrams from the Internet are also cited. Failure to cite references or plagiarism may result in a zero on the entire lab project.
    8. Conclusions based on your research (10%): Key results and findings are mentioned here. The presenters comment on whether or not the data supports the hypothesis as well as the overall success of the research.
  2. Ability to Create a Quality Product (5 points total)
    1. Overall organization (60%): The presentation was organized, easy to follow and understand, information is clear and concise, and the presentation is professionally presented.
    2. Use of visuals (40%): Visuals such as diagrams, charts, tables, etc. are used appropriately. Visuals are clearly labeled.
  3. Effective Oral Communication (5 points total)
    1. Student comprehension (60%): The students show an in-depth understanding of the material, are able to explain all of the data in the presentation, are able to thoughtfully answer questions, and do not over-rely on notes.
    2. Delivery (40%): The students are able to explain the topic in an understandable manner, are enthusiastic about the topic, make eye contact with the audience, and use appropriate volume and rate of speech.
