Course Design Best Practices

Below is a page in my syllabus describing conduct rules and other information.  It is important to let my students know my expectations  for student conduct and consequences for cheating and plagiarism.  I can then refer back to the syllabus if students have questions on this information.

A.   Important Notes:

1.   PLAGIARISM

The concept of plagiarism can be confusing, and there is a difference between deliberate and accidental plagiarism.  However, both will be treated the same in this course.

Plagiarism defined:  "Plagiarism includes the copying of the language, structure, ideas, and/or thoughts of another and passing off same as one's own, original work, or attempts thereof."  (from Virginia Tech Honor System Constitution, February 1998).

  • If plagiarized work is suspected and proven, the student will receive a 0 for the assignment and is subject to sanctions outlined in the Student Code of Conduct.

  • The following web site offers an excellent definition of both deliberate and accidental plagiarism:  <http://www.millikin.edu/wcenter/plagiarism1.html>

Avoid plagiarism by proper citation of your sources. See Lab supplement page 131 for examples. Writing tutors are also available in the Academic Support Center to help you with citing sources.

2.       No cheating is allowed.  Both your test/assignment and the person’s test/assignment that you copied from will be taken away and no points will be given for the test/assignment for either of you.

3.       Accommodations for students with special needs.  Anoka-Ramsey Community College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age or disability in employment or in the provision of our services.  With the first week of class, students with special needs that require accommodations should contact the Director of Access Services at 763-433-1350 to discuss possible support services.

4.       Electronic devices like cell phones, headphones, I-PODS etc. are discourteous and inappropriate in class.  All such devices must be turned off and put away when in class.

5.       During exams, no electronic devices like calculators and cell phones are allowed.  They must be turned off and put away.

6.  It is expected that you will be on time for lecture and lab.  If you miss receiving a handout or information discussed before you arrived, it is your responsibility to obtain this information by other means after class.

7.  In class discussions, it is expected and required that you use correct English and that you participate both by contributing your comments and questions as well as courteously listening to others.
