Specific Active Learning and Assessment Activities
1. Pre-Quiz
Students may be required to achieve
a particular quiz score before attending class/lab or before participating
in the related Discussion.
2. Discussion-Based Quizzes
Private groups of 3-5 students
discuss posted questions that are meant to get students talking about key
concepts prior to a quiz. The quiz grade is ultimately deleted for those
who do not participate in this pre-quiz discussion. [This can also be used
more comprehensively, linking tools: instructor would check misunderstanding
based on quiz statistics and discussion; clarify missed concepts via discussion
follow-up or within Course Contents; and ask students to apply clarified
concepts toward an application assignment, lab, or project.
3. Mastery Quizzing
Students take deep, core concept
quizzes until they get them right. Their final scores decrease in value
with each repetition, but the focus is on remembering and understanding
the concepts accurately.
4. Short, Anonymous Surveys
Surveys can be built into the
completion of units to check understanding and effectiveness of course
content and activities.
