This week we will review some major events that lead up to the Civil War.  Next, we will look at some photographs of the war, and read some historians who discuss "Why the North Won."

I.  Review.  These are some major events that lead us into Civil War.  Some of these will be familiar to you from your reading in A People and a Nation.  Take this time to read these assigned selections and review.

        1.  The Compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Act

        2.  Eric Foner on the Fugitive Slave Act

      
II.  The issue of John Brown's Raid.  Read this discussion of the raid itself, and how it has since been interpreted as a cause of the Civil War.

III.  Civil War Photography at the National Archives.  Read this brief introduction and click on at least 10 photographs.  Make notes of your impressions.

IV.  Photography collections at the Library of Congress.  Spend a few minutes clicking around this website and viewing at least 10 pictures.

V.  "Why the North Won," *This is an article that is located on D2L (Materials --> Content)
*Be sure to pay attention to what these historians say about why the north won.  What explanation do they have?  Which explanations do they reject?
