Music and Social Movements: America in the 1960s
Your assignment will be five paragraphs in length, which will end up being approximately 1.5-2 double spaced pages. Upload to the D2L Assessments>Assignment Dropbox by Wednesday 3/26 at 9 a.m. 20 LA points.
Step One: Read this article:

Step Two: Listen to three songs mentioned in the article. (Google the songs; look for something on YouTube, making sure to find the lyrics so you can read along.)
1. Play either "Ballad of the Green Berets" OR "Okie from Muskogee."
2. Choose two other songs mentioned in the article.
Step Three: Search for a song not listed in the article. You could search for songs from any of the social movements listed below. Your song must be from the years 1960-1975. You might have success including "folk song" in your search terms.

Step Four: Complete the writing assignment:
Paragraph #1: The assigned article argues that anti-war songs changed throughout the course of the Vietnam war. How and why? Answer using details from the article. Citation: At the end of your answer, tell me which paragraph(s) you used.
Paragraphs #2-5: Give the title, musician, and date of the song you listened to. Summarize and analyze each song. What is the overall message of the song, and how does the song convey the message? What does this song teach you about U.S. history during this time period? Click on these two websites for some possible questions to consider as you're analyzing the song. Citation: At the end of each paragraph, put the URLs for the websites you used while doing your research. If you have a particular favorite song, we will likely play it in class.
