How To Search for Peer-Reviewed Academic Journal Articles

(remember Interlibrary Loan -- ILL -- is an option! if you find an article that isn't available in full-text format)

Instructions for the assignment that you will submit are posted in D2L Materials > Content > Article Annotation Assignment.

Once you locate your article, you will be required to submit it to Linda for approval.  Post your citation in Contact Linda on D2L.  See the assignment instructions for all due dates.  See below for a list of highly regarded peer-reviewed history journals -- but there are certainly many others!

These step-by-step will guide you through the process of locating an article in a peer-reviewed history journal. You can use either of these search engines but I would suggest trying both and see which results you like better!

EBSCO

  1. https://www.anokaramsey.edu/resources/library/

  2. Scholarly Journals and Newspaper Databases

  3. Choose EBSCO

  4. Log-in page (use STAR ID)

  5. Click the small "select" button under the yellow "continue" button at the top left.  This will select all databases.

  6. Click continue. This will take you to a new page where you'll input your search.

  7. Scroll down to the "limit your results" box on the left.  UNCLICK full-text and CLICK peer-reviewed. Put "history" in the "Publication" box.

  8. Put in your search terms.  My demonstration was "end of Reconstruction Era U.S. History."

  9. Put "History" in the "Publication Box"

  10. Look at your results. Scroll down and look at the left panel and click "academic journals" as that will further limit your results.

  11. You will likely generate many thousands of results.  Some ways to limit your results as you scroll through:

  12. Choose an article longer than 10 pages.

  13. Choose an article from the last 20ish years.

  14. Do NOT choose something that includes the words "review" as that is going to be a book review or topic review.

  15. If the full-text version of your article is not available, don't worry!  You can request it through interlibrary loan and it will be e-mailed to you.

JSTOR (excellent search engine for history journals!)

  1. Choose JSTOR from the library webpage: https://www-jstor-org.accarcproxy.mnpals.net/

  2. Log-in if needed.

  3. Click advanced search, which will bring you to a new page.

  4. Put in your search terms.  Again, I tried "(end of reconstruction era united states)"

  5. Scroll down and click "articles" and under "Journal Filter" click "history." You could also use this page to limit by years/date published if you wish.

  6. As above, limit your selections with these criteria: Choose an article longer than 10 pages.

  7. Choose an article from the last 20ish years.

  8. Do NOT choose something that includes the words "review" as that is going to be a book review or topic review.

  9. If the full-text version of your article is not available, don't worry!  You can request it through interlibrary loan and it will be e-mailed to you.
