Scoops are designed for providing a lot of light over a very large area. They are just a semi-circular instrument with a high powered lamp that puts out a lot of light.
These are good for washes on cycloramas, or for just covering large areas. We don't normally use them for lighting the actual playing area.
They do have a gel holder, but the opening is so large (12"-16") that you use a lot of gel for each instrument.
