The Table Saw

Functions of the Table Saw

  • The Table Saw is probably the most dangerous saw we have in the shop, due to the ease with which one can encounter the blade and due to the size of the materials we normally cut on the table saw.
  • Normally used to "rip" panel products (plywood, masonite, underlayment, etc.)
  • Not very useful to crosscut lumber, but occasionally we need to "rip" a piece of lumber to a smaller size, e.g., reducing a 2"x4" to a 1"x2". Ripping lumber is a very cautious process, and should only be done with the assistance of the teacher or a work-study student.
  • With some careful setup, it can be used to cut angles, but the set up can be challenging and running materials through an angled blade can be tricky. Again, seek out the assistance of the teacher or a work-study student.
  • As with all cutting tools, be sure to wear eye protection
