Grading: For weeks 1-12, there will be a 15-point grading opportunity each week.  Grading opportunities will include quizzes, handouts and formal lab reports.  You will be allowed to drop the lowest grade of the 15-point lab grades.  The successful identification of your lab unknown is worth 20 points and your poster will be worth 20 points.  You will also be required to maintain a lab notebook throughout the semester.  A handout further discusses this notebook.  Therefore the total possible points for lab is:

11 15-point lab grades =       165 pts.

Unknown identification =         20 pts.

Poster presentation =              20 pts.

Lab notebook                         30 pts.

Total                                  235 pts.

Gross and minor infractions of lab safety and equipment maintenance (e.g., microscope care) will result in point deductions.

Attendance:  Attendance is mandatory and no lab can be made up if missed.  Be prompt coming to lab as important announcements may be made at the very beginning of lab.  You are responsible for any material or announcements you may have missed if you are absent or tardy.

TIPS FOR STAYING CAUGHT UP IN MICROBIOLOGY LAB:

1.      Stay calm, don't panic.  Labs may be rushed at first, but time will always be allotted the next lab period to finish what you don’t finish in one lab period.

2.      Read the syllabus before each lab period to know what you are doing that day.  Read the exercise in the lab manual before lab.

3.  As you read through the exercises before lab, highlight the PURPOSE and EXPECTED RESULTS. Lab time is VERY limited. You won’t finish if you have to waste time reading through the experimental procedures.

4. Remember the organisms you are working with are not all genetically identical, even if they are within the same species classification.  They may not do what you expect them to do.  Microbiology is not a black and white science.

5. All assignments are due AT THE BEGINNING of the lab period they are due.  Quizzes will be conducted at the beginning of each lab period or end of lecture.  Be ready to go at the beginning of each lab period.

6. Always ask if uncertain.
