Scholarships and Internships

Scholarships

The Loyola B. Thiltgen scholarship is named after the college's very first Political Science professor. Loyola B. Thiltgen, who retired in 1992, is a distinguished Faculty Emeritus of Political Science. Criteria for the scholarship are:

* Be a returning sophomore

* Have a minimum of 2.0 GPA

* Carry a minimum of 8 credits

* Preference for women majoring in Political Science

           "I have always perceived teaching as a true vocation, as an opportunity to seek truth. Most revealing to me was the discovery, so many years ago, that truth is multi-faceted and comprehensive. If one lives long enough, one realizes that all of us perceive truth through the lens of our own disciplines. And that, of course, is why we desperately need each other.

Loyola Thiltgen

There are  a number of other college foundation and also community-based scholarships open to Political Science students.

See scholarship eligibility requirements and application instructions.

Internships

Political Science is about "book knowledge," but also about gaining practical experience in politics and government. The Political Science department has placed students -  in a variety of functions - in state legislative offices, with the district's U.S. Congressperson, political parties, interest groups, local community groups, and political campaigns. Some of these internships are considered full-time, others part-time; some are paid, others volunteer positions. The POLS 2265 Political Science Practicum credit course encourages political internships and field work.

In addition, the college offers more general for-credit courses which explore career options and interests and help develop professional skills through practical work experience in different work environments. These courses are:

  • CAOR 1100 Career Planning Workshop
  • CAOR 1102 Career Development
  • CAOR 2297 Field Experience and Seminars
