Canada Wild Rye (Elymus canadensis)

Other Common Names: Nodding Wild Rye

Family: Grass (Poaceae)

Height: 2 1/2  - 6' (75 - 180 cm)

Flower Size: 2  - 12" (5 - 30.5 cm) flower head

Flowering Season: July - August

Ecological Preferences: Dry to moist sandy or rocky soils

Select Characteristics: The drooping seed heads possess 1/2 - 1 1/2" (1.3 - 3.8 cm) awns, bristle-like processes extending outward. E. canadensis has an extensive root system, beneficial for reaching water and holding the soil in place.

Historical Significance: Good forage for grazing animals. Some Native American tribes used the seeds as a food source.
