Other Common Names: Wool Grass, Yellow Indian Grass, Wild Oatgrass

Family: Grass (Poaceae)

Height: 2 1/2 - 6' (75 - 180 cm)

Flower Size: 4 - 12" (10 - 30.5 cm) flower head

Flowering Season: July - August

Ecological Preferences: Mesic (medium moisture) sites, but can withstand occasional flooding

Select Characteristics: The ligule, the collar formed at the junction of the leaf blade and the portion that wraps around the stem, has a unique "rabbit ear" or "rifle sight" appearance. 

Historical Significance: Good forage for grazers. Good prairie hay if cut and dried before maturity.
