Other Common Names: Mesquite Grass, Tall Grama Grass

Family: Grass (Poaceae)

Height: 10 - 40" (3.9 - 15.7 cm)

Flower Size: Mature seed heads 3 - 16" (1.2 - 6.3 cm)

Flowering Season: July - September

Ecological Preferences: Dry, well-drained soil. Prefers slightly alkaline versus neutral or acidic soil. Does not tolerate shading from adjacent plants.

Select Characteristics: Even though the seeds are attached all around the slightly zigzag central stalk, they hang down uniformly on one side.

Historical Significance: Good forage for grazers. Good prairie hay.
