Other Common Names: Blackbent, Tall Prairie Grass, Wild Redtop, Thatch Grass

Family: Grass (Poaceae)

Height: 2 - 7' (60 - 210 cm)

Flower Size: Pyramidal-shaped flower cluster 6 -20" (2.4 - 7.9 cm)

Flowering Season: August - September

Ecological Preferences: Moist areas on a wide range of soil types

Select Characteristics: A V-shaped tuft of hairs is found on the leaf blade adjacent to its point of attachment to the stem. The roots may reach down 10 - 11'  (3  - 3.4 m).

Historical Significance: Good forage for grazers and good source of seeds for a variety of birds.
