Other Common Names: Tall Blazing Star, Gayfeather

Family: Sunflower (Asteraceae)

Height: 2 - 5' (60 -150 cm)

Flower Size: Heads about 1/2" (1.3 cm) wide

Flowering Season: July - October

Ecological Preferences: Wide range, but preference for damp soil.

Select Characteristics: Flowering begins at the top of the spike inflorescence (flower cluster) in July and moves downward throughout late summer and fall.

Historical Significance: Parts of many species of Liatris were used by numerous Native American tribes for treating ailments including diarrhea and urinary system problems. Parts were also used as a stimulant for horses.
