Rough Blazing Star (Liatris aspera)

Rough Blazing Star

 

Family: Sunflower (Asteraceae)

Height: 6 - 48" (40 - 120 cm)

Flower Size: 3/4" (2 cm) wide

Flowering Season: August - October

Ecological Preferences: Dry and/or sandy soil.

Select Characteristics: The individual flowers may be sessile (without a stalk) or short stalked.

Historical Significance: Parts of many species of Liatris were used by numerous Native American tribes for treating ailments including diarrhea and urinary system problems. Parts were also used as a stimulant for horses.
