Blue Vervain (Verbena hastata)

Blue Vervain

 

 

Family: Vervain (Verbenaceae)

Height: 2 - 6' (30 - 180 cm)

Flower Size: 1/8" (3 mm) wide

Flowering Season: July - September

Ecological Preferences: Damp,  gravelly or heavy loam soils

Select Characteristics: The flowers at the bottom of spike bloom first, followed by others,  progressing out to the tip.

Historical Significance: The genus name Verbena is Latin for "sacred  plant"  and was thought to be a cure-all medicinal plant. It was used to treat coughs, colds and gastrointestinal ailments.
