Hoary Vervain (Verbena stricta)

Other Common Names: Mullein - Leaved Verbena, Woolly Verbena

Family: Vervain (Verbenaceae)

Height: 1 - 4' (30 - 120 cm)

Flower Size: 1/2" (1.3 cm) long

Flowering Season: June - September

Ecological Preferences: Found often in disturbed areas and degraded prairies.

Select Characteristics: The flower color can range from blue to rose. The leaves and stem normally are densely hairy. The leaves are sessile, that is, without a petiole or stalk, attaching directly to the stem. The flowering sequence is from bottom to top on the up to 8" spike. It is drought resistant, with roots up to 12 feet long.

Historical Significance:  The seeds were roasted and ground into flour and meal. Tea from the leaves was used to treat stomach ailments.
