Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum)

Boneset

Other Common Name: Thoroughwort

Family: Sunflower (Asteraceae)

Height: 2 - 4' (60 -120 cm)

Flower Size: Individual heads 1/4" (6 mm) long

Flowering Season: July - October

Ecological Preferences: Low ground, wet soil.

Select Characteristics: The wrinkled, hairy leaves are perfoliate, meaning that the opposite leaves unite, clasping the central stem.

Historical Significance: It was thought by early herbalists that the shape of a plant was a sign for the part of the body that it could treat. Since the stem appeared to grow through the leaves, it was assumed that the plant would aid in the setting of bones. The leaves were wrapped within splints around broken bones. A tea was also made to treat colds, coughs and constipation.
