Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum virginianum)

Other Common Names: Basil, Mountain Thyme, Prairie Hyssop

Family: Mint (Laminiaceae)

Height: 2 -3' (60 - 90cm)

Flower Size: 1/4" (6 mm) wide

Flowering Season: July - September

Ecological Preferences: Wet to dry soils.

Select Characteristics: Only a few flowers bloom at one time within a flower cluster. The leaves have a strong minty odor.

Historical Significance: A tea was used as a general tonic, to treat a rundown condition. A poultice made of leaves was placed on the sites of animal bites to hopefully prevent rabies. Leaves were sometimes used as a seasoning for cooking.
