New Jersey Tea (Ceanothus americanus)

New Jersey Tea

 

 

Other Common Names: Red Root, Mountain Sweet, Wild Snowball

Family: Buckthorn (Rhamnaceae)

Height: 3 - 4' (90 -120 cm)

Flower Size: 1/5" (5 mm) wide in 3/4 - 1 1/2 " (2 - 3.8  cm) flower clusters

Flowering Season: May - September

Ecological Preferences: Gravelly or rocky sites

Select Characteristics: Appears as a low shrub. Has twisted, knotted roots.

Historical Significance: Certain plant parts were used to treat sore throats, dysentery and gonorrhea. The tea made from the leaves was said to be the best substitute for the real thing during the Revolutionary War. Because of the high quantities of tannin it was also used in the tanning of hides.
