Historical Significance:
Certain plant parts were used to treat sore throats,
dysentery and gonorrhea. The tea made from the
leaves was said to be the best substitute for the
real thing during the Revolutionary War. Because of
the high quantities of tannin it was also used in
the tanning of hides.
