Other Common Names: Brown Betty, Brown-eyed Susan

Family: Sunflower (Asteraceae)

Height: 1 - 2' (30 - 60 cm)

Flower Size: Flower head is 2 - 3" (5 - 7.5 cm) wide

Flowering Season: June - October

Ecological Preferences: Dry, well drained soils

Select Characteristics: A biennial, flowering the second year. The center, disc flowers, may appear dark brown to dark purplish black. The stem and leaves are extremely hairy.

Historical Significance: Although it is an attractive plant, it can be poisonous to livestock.
