Sneezeweed (Helenium autumnale)

Sneezeweed

 

 

Family: Sunflower (Asteraceae)

Height: 2 -5' (60 -150 cm)

Flower Size: 1 - 2" (2.5 -5 cm) wide

Flowering Season: August - October

Ecological Preferences: Wet meadow and swamps.  It is presently found here only in the catch-pond east of the Campus Center building.

Select Characteristics: The petals (ray flowers), each with three scallops at the tip, droop backward from the ball-shaped head of disc flowers. The stems are winged with extensions of the leaves.

Historical Significance: The dried leaves were inhaled as a snuff to induce sneezing, that was thought to drive evil spirits out of the body.
