Stiff Goldenrod (Solidago rigida)

Family: Sunflower (Asteraceae)

Height: 1 - 5' (30 - 150 cm)

Flower Size: 1/3" (8 mm) in flower clusters about 2" (5 cm) wide

Flowering Season: August - October

Ecological Preferences: Dry prairies and open woods

Select Characteristics: It is the only flat-topped Solidago with a hairy (rough) stem. The long, possibly five feet, taproot allows for S. rigida to compete well with other plants during dry periods.

Historical Significance: A lotion was made from the flowers to treat bee stings. A tea made from the leaves was used to treat sore throats.
