Finding Scholarly Articles and Chapters from Scholarly Books
for the English 2235 Bibliographic Essay
1.) Begin with the ARCC Library Home Page: http://www.anokaramsey.edu/library/coonrapids.cfm
Check out the "Pathfinder" section on this page. There is a "Literary Criticism" pathfinder which lists many of the key reference works and books in the circulating collection in the ARCC library (along with their call numbers). In addition, it lists three key internet sites on literary criticism. Finally, it gives suggestions for searching for literary criticism materials on WebPALS (see #2 below).
2.) To find scholarly books and collections of scholarly articles (each chapter written by a different critic) in the library's catalog, use the WebPALS link: http://www.pals.msus.edu/
You can search the ARCC library only, or any library (or all libraries) in the PALS system.
If you are ever asked for a username and password, your username is the 14-digit number under the barcode on your student ID card, and your password is the first eight characters of your last name.
I recommend doing a "Keyword" search and using the author's full name as your keyword. This will bring up works about the writer, rather than works by the writer.
If you find a book you like but ARCC does not own it, you can use the Inter-Library Loan feature. Give the library about 1-2 weeks to obtain the book.
Perhaps consult the "Selected Bibliographies" sections at the end of both NAAL Volume C and Volume D. Then, use WebPALS to track down a book or collection of articles that looks interesting.
3.) To find scholarly articles in the library's catalog, use MnLINK: http://www.mnlinkgateway.org
If this link does not work, use the link on the ARCC Library webpage.
Log in using the above username and password.
Try either the "ELM - All Databases [shared]" or the "ELM - Full Text Magazines/Journals [shared]."
4.) To find scholarly articles, use EBSCO: http://search.epnet.com
If this link does not work, use the link on the ARCC Library webpage.
Off-campus ID: S4070783
Password: Password
Try the Academic or MegaFILE databases.
5.) To find scholarly articles, try GALE: http://infotrac.galegroup.com/menu
If this link does not work, use the link on the ARCC Library webpage.
Off-campus password: elm4you (lowercase)
6.) To find scholarly articles, try Proquest: http://proquest.umi.com/pqdweb
If this link does not work, use the link on the ARCC Library webpage.
On-campus account name is 0094P7HMTR; password is WELCOME
Off-campus account name is 03XP9B2DDP; password is WELCOME
7.) To find other scholarly articles, begin with some well-known literature reference books in the ARCC library's Reference Section, such as Nineteenth Century Literary Criticism. Then, use MnLINK or one of the other databases, such as EBSCO, to retrieve the article.
8.) As a last resort, use the internet and World Wide Web, either Google -- http://www.google.com/ -- or Google Scholar -- http://scholar.google.com/
Be sure the article has the author's full name and educational credentials.
Be sure the article is at least 10 printed pages long.
Be sure the article has its own bibliography.
In short, be sure the article is scholarly and credible. Check with me if you have something you are not sure about.
9.) Perhaps also see if the NAAL website -- http://www.wwnorton.com/naal -- has any links to scholarly articles for particular writers.
