Organizing a Book Evaluation Essay

Option #1 - A Mostly Positive Review (A):

I.  Introduction -- An attention-getter appropriate for your chosen audience.  Perhaps include some information about the writer and/or subject(s)?  Perhaps state your thesis?

II.  Summary -- Briefly summarize the book in one paragraph.  Include information that might interest your chosen audience.  Be careful not to give away the ending.

III.  Concession -- Briefly cover 1-2 negative points about the book, perhaps just in one paragraph.

IV.  Argument -- Present your 3-5 positive points about the book, using one fully developed paragraph for each point.  In each paragraph, state your main idea and support it using references, brief summaries, and quotations from the book.

V.  Conclusion -- If you haven't already stated your thesis, do so now.  Perhaps include some other information about the writer and/or subject(s)?  Perhaps include some information from his visit?  Perhaps mention his other work?  Etc.
