Paragraphs vs. Essays

 

A Paragraph Has:
An Essay Has:
One main idea developed in a number of sentences.
One main idea developed in a number of paragraphs.
A topic sentence which states the main idea of the paragraph.

An introductory paragraph with a thesis statement which states the main (central) idea of the essay.
Middle sentences giving supporting details, description, other support, and explanation.

Body paragraphs giving support details, description, other support, and explanation. Each body paragraph will have its own topic sentence.
A strong ending sentence.
A strong concluding paragraph.
An orderly paragraph pattern.
An orderly essay pattern or outline.
