Help your
Senior gather applications to the schools they are considering. Take a
close look at any deadlines for admission, scholarships, housing, etc.
You do not want to be sitting there in the Spring with no applications
sent in. |
Your Senior may possibly need a line-up of people to write letters of
recommendations. Help them find people who know them and that can write
positive and constructive things about your student. |
Strongly encourage your Senior to apply for admission as soon as he/she
can. |
Talk to the high school counselors about local scholarships and get the
applications. You can even help them fill it out.
Apply for scholarships before Winter Break!
Encourage
your Senior to continue to challenge him/herself and take solid elective
courses in high school. |
Attend college fairs with your Senior. If you need to know where and
when the next college fair is, then ask your high school counselor or call
Upward Bound. |
Visit college campuses and attend events at the colleges the student is
interested in. |
Parents:
this year's academic record will go a long way toward either helping or
hurting your Junior’s chances of gaining admission to their school of
choice. Be sure to encourage them to not slack off with classes and to
maintain acceptable grades and progress in school.
Research possible colleges and request information from them by calling
them or visiting the websites.
It’s not too early to visit college campuses. Be sure to make
appointments. Utilize Upward Bound. The advisors can make appointments
and bring students on college visits just as long as the students have
that day off from school, and it is on a weekday.
Make sure that your Junior continues to take solid elective courses
(extra math, science, foreign language, computers, etc.). Be sure to
check the high school’s requirement list to make sure that your Junior is
on track to graduate.
It might be a
good idea for your Junior to run for leadership positions in the
organizations they are involved in. Scholarships and colleges love a
student who is involved with the community and their school.

Attend an
Upward Bound ACT preparation workshop.
