Chapter 1 Learning Goals

After studying this chapter, you should be able to:

define personality and understand each of the elements of the definition of personality;
describe and provide examples of the three levels of personality analysis;
describe the fissure in the field of personality psychology between studies designed to investigate human nature analysis and studies designed to investigate individual and group differences;
describe and understand how a focus on domains of knowledge may bridge the fissure in contemporary personality psychology;
describe and be familiar with the six domains of knowledge in personality psychology; and
discuss the three key purposes of scientific theories, and be able to distinguish theories from beliefs.
