LA #2: “Selling” American
Imperialism
1. **Read the article entitled "Justifying American Imperialism." *This is an article that is located on D2L (Materials --> Content).
2.
Follow
this link to the "Structures" page at this on-line exhibit.
**Click "Exhibit Buildings" -- the first
square on the left. Scroll through the slides. How would you
describe these "fancier" buildings?
2. Write at least one-and-a-half double-spaced pages with reasonable margins and font size and without large headings or titles -- I will rely on 12 point Times New Roman as my standard and I will reformat your paper if needed. Longer papers will certainly be accepted and read. Keep in mind this is a formal academic assignment and you will be evaluated both on the quality of your writing and the content of your ideas and evidence.
In your paper, answer the following question:
Using what you learned in the D2L Reading (“Justifying
American Imperialism”) and from viewing the photographs of the 1904 Louisiana
Purchase Exposition, how did the United States use the Philippine Reservation
and the 1904 World’s Fair to justify engaging in Imperialism?
How would you compare the different types of buildings the visitors would have
seen?
In your paper you might wish to discuss some of the arguments that
pro-Imperialists used to advocate their position.
(such as Social Darwinism.)
How do the photographs help to “sell” the American public on that particular
argument?
Getting help: You should certainly feel free to bring your paper to the Writing Tutors in the Academic Support Center. I also suggest you have a friend read your paper to help catch any grammatical errors. If you want to share your first paragraph or an idea or two that you have, feel free! You can post them in Contact Linda and I will reply. Remember my AI policy which prohibits the use of Grammarly or any similar webite which would rewrite your essay for you.
Citations: You must include a
citation at the end of each paragraph to demonstrate you gained your knowledge
from the assigned materials, not through AI usage. If you quote from the D2L reading, you may use the
title and a page number (“Justifying American Imperialism,” p. 105) and when
discussing the photographs you can use the title of the photograph, such as “Bow
and Arrow Shooting.”
