Step 5

As you start feeding the material into the saw, use a smooth, even pressure. Make sure the material stays against the fence evenly. Do not try to radically change the position of the material as it is being cut. If you run into problems, turn off the machine, remove the material, and start over.

Note that as Nancy begins to feed the material into the saw, Ben is ready to accept it on the other side. At this point, Nancy will guide the material--Ben just helps insure it comes out without binding or falling.

As the material emerges, Ben catches it and helps guide it out. Again, Nancy still controls the way the material moves through, but Ben helps make sure the material doesn't run into problems as it emerges from the other side.

As Nancy's end of the material gets closer to the guard, Ben now begins to exert more control by gently pulling the material on through. At this point, Nancy could also use a push stick to continue to push the material forward. Ben pulls the material on through the blade, and Nancy turns the machine off.

If cutting a series of items, it is much safer to turn the saw off as you position the next board instead of letting the saw run.
