Student Suggestions I often ask students if they have any advice for the next students to take Astronomy. Here are their ideas: From Spring 2007 Come to class every day. Take notes, study notes, and check the website frequently. Run, run for your lives! Come to all the classes and ask questions. Use flashcards! Make questions out of the topic outline. Be there every day! Ask lots of questions!! Take notes! This class is not as hard as people make it seem and long as you come to class each day, take good notes, and study. Also, know exactly what you’d say to answer the questions. When studying, print out the topic outlines so you know what you need to know. Go to class! Tests were 10x harder when I didn’t go. It’s also very hard to study out of the book, so take good notes. Do not buy the book…seriously waste of money! Didn’t ever use. Study for tests and take good notes. Don’t use the book. Take notes. Get all the details and ask for help if you don’t understand. Read the book. Don’t skip class because it is hard to catch up. Take good notes and read the book. Pay attention! Remember when the reading reports are due. Glance over the notes regularly. View first test as practice for the others. Just come to class and take notes. It made all the difference on my test scores when I came to class the periods beforehand. This is not a leisure class. You will have to learn the course material to do well. Take excellent notes, pay attention, you don’t need the book if you’ve taken Astronomy in high school or if you know about it already, have an abstract mind. The class tests are designed so that you need a deep understanding of the material. Cramming for the test will get you in trouble. Studying a half hour each day will go a long way, and Professor Wehling is more than happy to elaborate on something if you have questions. Write down a lot more than what’s on the board (all the things the professor said he didn’t write down but you should know). Copy down all the pictures because they tend to be on the tests. Make sure you’re on top of the topic outlines. They’re very helpful. Go to the professor if you need any help. Ask questions! Make sure to pay attention and attend class. Really have a good grasp of the concept so you can fully explain yourself on the test. Use all available information given to you…website, lecture, and book. It will help you add more depth to the answers on the questions on the exams. Print out topic outlines and use them in class to take notes. It is very helpful!! Read the topic outlines before you go to class as well as reading ahead in the book. Go to class every day. Don’t underestimate the first test. Take notes that are really in-depth for the test and ask questions. Study a lot for the test. When studying for the tests use the book, too. Come to class and listen and take good notes that you will understand. If you don’t understand the topic, try to look in the book to see if it explains it better for you. Always be prepared for class. Study for the exams. Don’t just wing them. Print up the topic outline and use it for notes. It works very well. Come to class every day, you miss more that you think if you skip. Take notes written on the board. Draw examples and be able to explain them. Study. Study very hard and take good notes asking yourself why that is right. Get ready for the first test and always go to class. If you are not good in science, don’t take this class. You have to have some science background. Don’t buy the book–just notes. When taking notes, write down what he says, not just what he writes. Use the book to help you study for tests. It does a good job at reinforcing concepts discussed in class, and sometimes makes it easier to understand. Go to the stargazing night. Draw pictures because it helps to understand. Take good notes, and listen to what you say closely, a lot is included on exams. Take notes as if your life depends on it. Use the topic outlines. Write down everything on the board,a nd only use the book if you miss class. Make sure to take a lot of notes, the book is not that useful. A good way to see if you really know the material is to try and explain it to someone who doesn’t know anything about astronomy. If they understand it, you explained it well! Ask questions. Study with someone else. Attend lectures. It will really help you understand better. Come to class. Reading the book isn’t necessary. Look at your notes more often than the night before the test. Write down more than just what was on the board. Reading the book is not important. Make 8x10 flashcards w/markers for color. It really helps visualize the concepts. Take good notes and organize your thoughts on paper so you can remember all the ideas. Studying with flash cards helps. Do the reading reports. They are a vert easy way to get points. Take a lot of notes and explain your answers in detail on the tests. Explain why and how things happen. Ask questions in his office. You don’t need the book. Focus on how and why, not just the terms. Make sure to write down more than just what he writes on the board. Print out the topic outlines and stuffy off of those. Good luck! Read the book only for things you are having a lot of trouble understanding. Take notes on anything and everything you can that the professor says or writes. Miss as little class as possible. You will get confused and will soend much more time outside of class trying to understand things than the amount of time class took. From Fall 2006 Study a lot. Be sure to attend class. Though attendance is not mandatory, the lectures are informative. Be in class, and be attentive. Take good notes, they are what get you good grades. Get your meeting done ASAP to help on test taking. Show up and take really good notes. Don’t buy the book–waste of money. Listen and attend class every day. Take good notes. Don’t look at the book. Read the book along with your notes. Go down the topic outline and see if you understand most things on there. Take notes and go to class. Think of the terms and ideas visually rather than memorizing words. Study hard. Pay attention to lectures. Study for the tests. STUDY!! for exams. If you come to lecture, do the reading reports, and study a bit, this course is NO problem. Just put in the effort. Take very good notes and don’t write down only what’s on the board. Never miss a class. Write down not only what he writes, but the things he says as well. Make sure you take more notes than just what is written on the board. Make sure you know what your notes mean when you are writing them. Make sure to study for tests. Come to class as much as possible for notes. Come to class and pay attention. Study, study, study. Make sure you take good notes and that you understand them. Draw pictures in the notes you take. Don’t get lazy with your studying and talk to people around you about what you are learning. Make note cards. Go over
outline. Make sure to write down more than just what is written on the board. Look over your notes! Make note cards and study them. Don’t just write what’s on the board, write what he says, also. Study! Attend the lectures. Take good notes. Draw pictures on tests to illustrate answers where applicable. Take more notes than just what’s on the board! Read the pages from your book to modiy the notes. Read textbook beforehand. Watch Carl Sagan series. Keep up with notes and readings, and don’t be afraid to ask questions on topics you don’t understand. Go to every class. You can’t do well on the tests if it’s material you’ve never covered. You get a lot of information out of every class period. Use pictures. If you don’t completely understand something, the book usually helps. If you’re not up for really wanting to know about the universe or whatever, then drop the class right now. Overprepare, make sure you fully understand why something is happening, and what causes it. Know the material–otherwise you won’t pass the tests. Read the book! He might say not to, but it really helped me. Also, look online at the topic outlines–they’re basically the test. Remember the little details along with the main ideas. A loto f times I would get a question ½ wrong for not knowing the exact details. Take good notes. HUGE—Take notes and show up for lecture. When doing the reading reports, print them all off at the same time so you have them. Do the drawings and take notes. Listen and write as much as you can. Only take this class if you are very serious about Astronomy. I took it because I thought it would be fun and interesting, and now I want to throw up if I even hear the word Astronomy. Keep good notes in language you can understand so when you’re reviewing for test, you remember the theory that was explained. Print out the pictures that go with the lecture–they really do help. And study way before the test. It is a lot of information to put into your brain. Use your chapter outlines and take notes according to that. Read the book. Don’t sleep in class. Study for tests. Explain your answers on your exams. Don’t talk—he hates it. Go to class! I got great test scores, except for the week I missed class. Take good notes, not just what is written on the board. Attend lectures. Stay up to date on things and study! Be prepared to answer anything about the material covered for the tests. Do the readings—they are simple points for your benefit. Ask questions! Read your chapter before class. Find many ways to absorb the information. Take more notes than he gives you. Basically, the test is on his lectures–not the book. Study hard–it’s not like what you’re used to in school. Go to class and take notes. Study before the day of the
test. Know the how and why on every topic. Be able to explain everything! Exams are very picky on word choice. Read book in addition to going over notes. Make notecards on regular paper. Helps a lot. Read the book! From Fall 2005 Read the chapters. Take in-depth notes. Study for tests, this is what makes your grade. They are hard but without much or any homework you need to do well. The class is very interesting. Just take the notes and do the readings, and you’ll do fine. Come to class and pay attention. Skipping class and reading the book won’t pay off. Don’t miss any tests. Study extremely hard for tests! Know the material inside and out. Make note cards—they help a
lot! Attend class. The tests do not limit themselves to information in the book. You will be tested on material presented outside of the book. Study! Draw lots of pictures on the exams. Read the book–you need to. If you don’t understand something taught in class it helps to read from the textbook. Make sure to print out the outlines and go by that to study and guide you. Use images given online to study for exams. Stay up to date on your readings. Go to class. Make flash cards on your notes and start studying a minimum of 2 days ahead of tests. This helped bring my grades from 68% and 74% to 91% and 93%. Take good notes, not just what’s on the board but what he says as well. Go to class all the time. Take good notes and read them. Don’t know if the book is any good…never opened it. Just show up for every lecture and you’ll be fine. Study every day. The class is not a cakewalk, but you learn a lot of interesting things. Really focus on how and why things work they way they do. The tests won’t be such a surprise then. Be there for every lecture, it helps. Take more notes than what he writes on the board. Write what he says. Read your book. It helps. Take this class with this teacher if you feel that Astronomy is your passion. It’s a difficult class. If I would have known beforehand it was like this, I wouldn’t have taken it. Make sure you read the book pages assigned in topic outlines and come to class to take notes. Read along in the book as you go. The reading isn’t that long. Read the book and go to class. Study, study, study. Meet with the professor ASAP after term begins for study help. Listen carefully, take more notes than you think you need. The book won’t help much, so you’ll mostly be relying on notes for study. The curve is low for a reason, so ask Ed what he wants out of the exams and gear your notes that way. Also, you don’t want to write a lot more than you have to for his exams, you’ll lose more points than you gain. Study your notes. Some students rely too much on the text. Attend lecture and try to understand the material given as a whole. Try to explain the big picture and don’t worry about why. Before tests, explain the concepts to a friend or family member to help crystallize your understanding. Focus on the concepts rather than memorizing facts. Find a study group. Think outside the box as far as test questions go. Meet with the professor for any questions (he is very helpful) and be prepared to answer lots of questions on tests. Pay very close attention during lecture and write down things said that aren’t on the board. Study and study hard. Don’t read the book and use it as notes. Rarely what you read in there is on the test. Show up for every lecture! Focus on the lectures!! If you don’t understand something, ask! Or look into the book for certain topics you have trouble on. Pay close attention to detail. Draw every picture you see the instructor draw and find a way to draw a picture of other concepts to help you understand them better. Ask the professor to change the test grading system around by first getting a majority vote with the entire class. Don’t make Astronomy (studying it) your life! Relax. Take really good notes and memorize them for the tests. You will do really well on tests that way. Don’t just write down what is on the board! Write down (and listen carefully) to everything! Ask questions. Pay attention in class. Study all the material. Do not miss lectures. If you are not interested in Astronomy, it will be hard to learn and do well in the class. This course involves more than just studying stars and telescopes. Read everything!! If you’re not good at understanding concepts, this is not your class. Make sure you break apart every concept and can thoroughly explain each topic. Read your notes nightly and make sure you really understand what you are learning. Don’t miss class. All lectures are important so be sure to keep up on the notes. Be prepared for many quizzes and tests. The class will require more studying than 90% of other classes. Material is less commonly known so hard to retain. But class is worthwhile. Actually study for the tests. Preparation is the key to success in here. Consider taking this class pass/fail if you normally have high grades or lower science grades. Attend lecture! Meet with professore the 1st day or before the 1st exam so you know how to study. Go to all of the lectures and read the book. Don’t forget about the book. Take good notes and read from the book. Thre’s not much outside work in this class to do so try and keep up on the readings. Write down good notes and study them, they are helpful on tests.
