Topic 11: Hail and Lightning

Please note: the questions listed are not the only items that you need to know. The questions point out basic information to help understand some topics, some concepts that may not be obvious to all students, and some of the more difficult concepts.

Hail     

  • Generally describe how hail forms in a cloud in the midwest U.S.

  • What is the importance of a hail embryo? How does it form?

  • How does the hail embryo become a hailstone?

Lightning   

  • How do positive and negative charges react around each other?

  • Describe charge separation. Describe the two theories we discussed about how charge separation occurs in clouds.

  • We broke the lightning process into 4 steps. Describe these steps.

  • Briefly describe how cloud-to-cloud lightning and in-cloud lightning happens.

Thunder  

  • Describe how thunder occurs.

  • Why does thunder from the same lightning stroke sound different to people in different locations?

  • How can we tell how far away lightning is from the thunder it produces?
