Welcome to the Department of Economics!
The Department of Economics at Anoka-Ramsey Community College is
focused on developing of the analytical skills needed by leaders in
business and government. Equally important to the Department of
Economics is educating students to become informed citizens who can be
active participants in their communities and the world. The courses
offered by the department focus on the principles governing markets and
market behavior as well as the structure and theory underlying state,
national, and international economic interactions. Courses are
intricately tied to the issues facing policy makers whether they
are making policy for government, households or business.
The core of the department curriculum is the two principles courses:
Principles of Macroeconomics and Principles of Microeconomics.
Macroeconomics focuses on
the economy of the nation and the nation’s interactions with the world
while
Microeconomics looks at
the interaction of businesses and households as they engage in market
transactions as consumers and workers. An overview of both
macroeconomics and microeconomics is provided in the introductory
course: Introduction to the American Economy. This pre-principles course
provides students with a basic economic knowledge and is popular with
high school students enrolled in the PSEO program. Students who are
concerned about the rigor of the traditional economics curriculum may
wish to start with the Introduction course before tackling the
Principles courses. Finally, students with an interest in a particular
aspect of economics may take the independent study course which involves
working closely with an economics faculty member to construct a learning
plan focusing on the student’s unique interests.
