Goal:
Through class activities, including service learning projects, establish
a dry prairie community on the north half of the small field.
Potential Class Projects/Activities:
1.
Through literature research determine differences among xeric, mesic,
and hydric prairies and plant species characteristic of each.
2.
Quantitatively assess site abiotic factors (soil type, runoff and
percolation rate indices etc.).
3.
Determine present species composition of the site and create a Natural
Area herbarium.
4.
Identify species not native to xeric prairies and remove them.
5.
Plant those species characteristic of xeric prairie.
6.
Construct a detailed baseline map of the site after species removal and
new plantings.
7.
Conduct ongoing studies of community development and interactions.
Service
Learning Component:
1.
Design and implement plan for removal of unwanted species.
2.
Identify, purchase, and plant desired species.
