Subunit 2:  Continuation of Old Field Succession Site

Goal:

Allow current successional conversion of old farm field to wooded community on the south half of the small field.

Potential Class Projects/Activities:

1.      Establish permanent study plots to conduct long term analysis of rate of replacement of existing species mix.

2.      Determine present species composition of entire site or selected permanent study plots creating a Natural Area herbarium.

3.      Establish long term study of changes in system structure and comparing to structure of wooded Subunit 6 and to minimally disturbed oak woodland off-campus.

4.      Make periodic comparisons of abiotic factors in permanent study plots and compare to values obtained in the adjacent woods.

5.      Design manipulative studies such as removing trees from a study plot and compare with adjacent plots where succession continues uninterrupted.
