Subunit 6:  Maintain Woodland Experimental Site

Goal:

 

Through class activities study various management and other questions in the nine acre main oak woods community.

 

 

Potential Class Projects/Activities:

 

1.      Investigate effectiveness of various management techniques to control exotic species such as buckthorn.

 

2.      Create permanent study plots to investigate the effects of rodent exclosures and other manipulated variables on succession.

 

3.      Evaluate effectiveness of various management approaches to reestablishing selected shrub and tree species into the system.

 

4.      Create a public education package to serve as a walking tour guide illustrating various ecological concepts such as effect of oak wilt etc. on system dynamics.

 

5.      Investigate any of a large number of questions relating to management or basic ecological relationships.

 

 

Service Learning Component:

 

1.      Plan and physically establish a nature hike trail for public use including numbered stations or stops.

 

2.      Plan and create a guide pamphlet for use with the above trail.
