Subunit 3:  Structural Restoration of Oak Openings/Savannah

Goal:

Restore the structure and tree species present in the pre-settlement oak and grassland communities once present on campus on the north two-thirds of the west field.

Potential Class Projects/Activities:

1.      Determine through literature search the woody species present in the native oak openings/oak savannah communities.

2.      Determine present tree and shrub species composition and adding to a Natural Area herbarium.

3.      Reintroduce historically important woody species from nearby seed sources.

4.      Identify existing seed sources for trees to be reintroduced and collect seeds.  Related experiments could include study of factors affecting seed germination and seedling survival including impact of rodent exclosures, depth of humus, seed scarification, or even micro-scale ground fire.

Service Learning Component:

1.      Remove exotic species and plant native species.
